Lately I've been encouraging a lot of people to get involved in social networking. Its hard, however, to provide a simple explanation of how it works and how business people can benefit from it.

Tools such as LinkedIn and Twitter don't bring immediate returns on the time you invest in them. And actually, its not the tools that bring the benefits, its the people you engage with by using these tools to share information with.

There is no doubt that some people will benefit more than others from social networking, because some people are just so much more open to engaging with others.

What goes around in social networking tends to come around: call it karma, if you like. If you are the sort of person that is willing to provide some friendly advice when someone asks for it, and are also willing to ask for advice, then you will benefit.

'What's in it for me?' is a question that completely misses the point.

I think the majority of networking is a long term idea of what can you do for others that eventually will reap benefits. There have been a number of books on the advantages of networking in general and the key ideas are that networks most successful elements are the provision of support with no immediate return. Networks are a mechanism of amplifying a request for support and increasing a likelihood of return.

Fully agree. I think part of the trick is to encourage people to have a go. To post something and see what response they get. To comment on other people's thoughts and read how that makes others respond. After a while for some peopple it becomes more natural. (of course for some it will always be too liitle gain for too much effort)

I'm into this big time for my personal interests - my car and my guitar. The guitar stuff is great as you learn new songs and ways to play stuff that you're struggling with. And the car networking helps with sorting problems, finding parts and rating suppliers, as well as organising meetings and events. And, as Fiona says, what goes around comes around - I've helped a couple of folk oout too.

So, if we can establish THE site for people interested in Life Sciences in Scotland, it will provide real benefits for the whole community. You don't have to extrapolate the benfits I get from my personal networking very far to understand how the LS community might benefit by networking here
