A two day event attended by businesses, healthcare professionals, academics and patient groups was held in Inverness on the 30th of September and the 1st of October 2010. The aim of the event was to explore the innovative use of modern technology to promote health and prevent illness as well as the development of a telehealthcare cluster in the Highlands and Islands.
Below is an overview of the content and achievements of the event as well as news and activity relating to P4 digital healthcare in the Highlands and Islands, Scotland and beyond.
Day 1: A Vision of Telehealthcare in Scotland, 2020, was developed at the Telehealthcare Summit held in Inverness in May this year (2010). The vision was underpinned by a world leading telehealthcare cluster. The Highlands and Islands of Scotland has a rapidly expanding regional life science sector with a high proportion of regional organisations either active or developing interests in telehealthcare.
An invited group of senior decision makers from industry and the Scottish public sector met to address the question "how to build a P4 telehealthcare cluster".
Day 2: 120 delegates gathered for a series of presentations and workshops. The first session entitled Why here, why now? touched upon the global trends and drivers that suggest a P4 approach to healthcare will be required. A number of ambitious developments in the region were highlighted as well as leading edge thinking and practice.
Three workshops collectively entitled "When worlds collide" were held to explore some of the future issues, challenges and opportunities in the emerging P4 landscape. Communication issues were highlighted in a session hosted by Weber-Shandwick, the use of the web was explored by representatives from UHI and NHS Grampian whilst the Glasgow School of Art explored the role of the creative industries in P4 healthcare. This final group has agreed to meet after the event in order to carry on this discussion.

What's next? The challenges facing those tasked with delivering health and care are unprecedented. Whilst the regional cluster in the Highlands and Islands has the potential to make a significant contribution to addressing these challenges there is a growing network which must work together in order to develop the P4 healthcare landscape. With this in mind, follow-on events will be organised in Spring and Autumn on an ongoing basis in order to highlight developments, best practice and as importantly, to provide a meeting place for those aiming to work at the leading edge of P4 digital.
