SUMMARY:Obstacles to Honesty in Research and Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Dr Peter Wilmshurst will describe his personal experience 
 of failure of doctors, organisations and regulators to deal with misco
 nduct. He will also discuss how the English libel laws can be used to 
 suppress discussion of research findings and to prevent whistle-blowin
 g.\n\n\n\nDr Peter Wilmshurst is a consultant cardiologist at the Roya
 l Shrewsbury Hospital. He was awarded the annual HealthWatch Award in 
 2003 for \"courage in challenging misconduct in medical research\". He
  was a co-principal investigator and the principal cardiologist in the
  multicentre MIST (Migraine Intervention with STARFlex Technology) Tri
 al. He is currently being sued for libel in the English High Court by 
 the US trial sponsor, NMT Medical Inc, for some comments that I made a
 bout the trial when lecturing at a US meeting and which were published
