Event Description

Dr Peter Wilmshurst will describe his personal experience of failure of doctors, organisations and regulators to deal with misconduct. He will also discuss how the English libel laws can be used to suppress discussion of research findings and to prevent whistle-blowing.

Dr Peter Wilmshurst is a consultant cardiologist at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. He was awarded the annual HealthWatch Award in 2003 for "courage in challenging misconduct in medical research". He was a co-principal investigator and the principal cardiologist in the multicentre MIST (Migraine Intervention with STARFlex Technology) Trial. He is currently being sued for libel in the English High Court by the US trial sponsor, NMT Medical Inc, for some comments that I made about the trial when lecturing at a US meeting and which were published on a US cardiology website.

Refreshments and discussion afterwards.

You can also join by LIVE BROADCAST from your office or home computer! For live broadcast, please register by emailing: wtcrf.education@ed.ac.uk & we will supply you with an URL. Or you can join this seminar by VIDEOCONFERENCE. Please contact us for more information.
